Newt Gingrich, a legnagyobb támogatottságot élvező republikánus párti elnökaspiráns bejelentette, hogy elnökké választása esetén haladéktalanul Jeruzsálembe telepítené át Tel-Avivból az amerikai nagykövetséget – közölték csütörtökön az amerikai napilapok.

Gingrich, aki a többi öt republikánus elnökaspiránshoz hasonlóan szerdán találkozott a Republikánus Zsidó Koalíció vezetőivel, azt is kijelentette, hogy külügyminiszternek John Bolton volt ENSZ-nagykövetet kérné fel. Az úgynevezett intervenciós külpolitika híveként ismert Bolton keményvonalas álláspontot képvisel Iránnal szemben, amelynek elnöke több ízben is megfenyegette Izraelt és tagadta a holokausztot.
Bolton, aki korábban maga is fontolóra vette, hogy versenybe szálljon a republikánus elnökjelöltségért, hivatalosan egyelőre az egyik aspiránst sem biztosította támogatásáról. A volt ENSZ-nagykövet kabinetje a The Washington Timesnak jelezte: nem valószínű, hogy Bolton a közeljövőben kommentálni kívánná Gingrich szavait.

John Bolton 2005 augusztusa és 2006 decembere között, szenátusi jóváhagyás nélkül volt az Egyesült Államok ENSZ-missziójának vezetője. George W. Mint mondta, az Izraelnek szánt összegek katonai célt szolgálnak, azok folyósítása a közös stratégiai érdekeken alapul.

Mitt Romney megerősítette, hogy megválasztása esetén első hivatalos útja Izraelbe vezetne. A The Wall Street Journal szerint a volt massachusettsi kormányzó ezzel a gesztussal szakítana azzal hagyománnyal, hogy az amerikai elnökök első útja a szomszédos Kanadába vezet.
