Több észrevételt is kapott szerkesztőségünk a papokkal készült riportra.

A következő riportalanyom Dr. Thorday Attila plébános.

Bátyám példája nyomán, aki jól érezte magát a budapesti Piarista Gimnáziumban, szüleim engem is oda írattak.

Ön nyíltan vállalta a katolikusságát!

A féléves katonai szolgálat, melyet papnövendékként, politikailag megbízhatatlanságom miatt rangfokozat nélkül csináltam végig, arra szolgált, hogy maradt fél évem felkészülni a papi Szemináriumra. A ceglédi laktanyában „megtettem, amit megkövetelt a haza”, vagyis kétnaponta az őrtoronyban ücsörögve kémleltem a messzeséget. A leszerelést követően, 1987 tavaszán, a nehezen megszerzett vízummal sikerült kijutnom Franciaországba, hogy életre szóló élményt szerezzek a világegyházról a burgundiai Taizében.

Beszéli a francia nyelvet?

Öt év budapesti tanulmányokat követően 1992-ben szentelt pappá Gyulay Endre püspök úr a szegedi Dómban.

Eközben évről évre, egyre több órában tanítottam szentírástudományt, s azon belül is a források elemzését, vagyis bibliai exegézist.

A társaimmal a mai napig tartom a kapcsolatot, s közülük sokan szép karriert futottak be, mások inkább családi életükkel mutatnak szép példát.

Mit jelent az, hogy szép barátságok kötődtek?

Tartom velük a kapcsolatot, a gyermekeiket én keresztelem.

Kedveltem a magány csöndjét, visszahúzódó voltam. Utólag belegondolva, ez Isten gondviselő akarata lehetett rám vonatkozóan. Szép barátságokat ápoltam kedves lányokkal, voltam szerelmes is, sőt a családi életre készülve még házasságra előkészítő tanfolyamon is részt vettem egyetemista koromban, de a hivatás erősebb volt. S én a papi élet mellett döntöttem.

Most egy plébánia vezetésére kaptam kinevezést.

Igyekszem teljes szívvel ott lenni, ahol vagyok! Egyik részről a plébániavezetés közösségszervezői, megszentelői, tanítói feladat.

Újszeged a város egyik legjobb plébániája! 20 ezer hívő lakik itt, s ennek többsége a katolikus egyházhoz tartozónak vallja magát. Két templomában hetente 14 szentmise, és sokféle lelkiségi csoport működik a plébánián – köszönhetően a kiváló plébános-elődöknek. Idősebb pap-kollegámmal együttműködve igyekszünk nemcsak a buzgó hívők lelki igényét kielégíteni, hanem szívügyem az egyháztól távol állók megszólítása is. Ennek része volt a Csíksomlyói Passiójáték szabadtéri előadása a templom melletti Ligetben, amely sok nézelődőt megérintett. A fiatal családokkal való kapcsolatépítést segíti az 1-6 évesek számára megnyitott Családi Napközi immár három csoportjának beindítása is. Templomaink védőszentjei – Árpád-házi Szent Erzsébet és Kalkuttai Boldog Teréz anya – segítsenek bennünket továbbra is, hogy a szolgáló szeretet útját járjuk!

How do you recall your childhood?

I was born in Budapest into a Catholic family with whom I naturally attended church. By the time I was in primary school I was an enthusiastic altar server, assisting at masses in my local church, despite the fact that in the 70’s my teachers did not look on this activity favourably. However my parents who were technically minded intellectuals embarked upon their religion with unshakable faith.
Which high school did you attend?
I attended the Piarist Grammar School of Budapest (one of the 8 catholic school permitted by the government at that time), following the example of my brother, who liked this school very much. I was a good student, and the school became my second home, so no wonder that I wanted to become a high school teacher after graduation. My religious studies teacher was Mr. Stephen Jelenits, we had 2 hours with him every week, and I drank in his words yet at that time it did not come to my mind to become a priest.
When I was 17, I participated in the National High School Competition for geography where I got very good results, so after secondary school I got into university directly without a serious entrance examination on my chosen subjects: mathematics and geography. To be able to start my studies I had to go to an interview at the Faculty of Natural Science at József Attila University of Szeged. The only thing I had to talk about was my “idealistic” world view, and they questioned me about my faith, that for the committee seemed to be a nuisance, and made me an unsuitable candidate for a teacher. Later I saw the sealed record of my university attendance interview that declared me totally unfit for teaching profession.
You undertook the Catholic Faith openly!
I graduated from the Piarist Secondary School. The university committee asked me – whether I really meant to become a teacher? I said: Yes, of course! There was no doubt in me about the compatibility of science and religion… To tell the truth I found the questions of the committee quite unrealistic and ideologically narrow minded. What I observed at high school from my teachers, and at home from my parents was the accurate practical model for me. Science and religion working side by side.
What were your parents’ occupations?
They were engineers. Their example opened up for me the way to mathematics. I enjoyed dealing with logical stuff, besides I had outstanding results in geography. As I said, I was rejected at the oral entrance exam, but my appeal was sent to the Ministry, where only saw my scores, so I got into the University of Szeged. After this I was immediately taken to the army for a year (it was obligatory for everyone at that time), then I began my studies in a city where I knew no one. I lived in lodgings initially alone. But pretty soon I got involved in great conversations with my university mates about the great questions of life.
I was really enthusiastic about biblical themes and almost an expert on Church-life so I often told them all about what sustains me. My testimony was credible, since I was one from among them. Quite a few also shared his own experiences and this enriched the ever-growing community of friends. In my apartment, we sang, we prayed – at the same time we learned together according to our chosen professions: pharmacist, teacher of history or physicist. Such mental and physical medium brought me an unexpected realization: I intended to become a priest! When I received my vocation I was only 21 years old and I kept it in my heart for several years. Only after graduation I revealed my decision to my parents and friends.
Since I got the call in Szeged, I intended to practice the priesthood here as well. Despite of my Budapest roots I gradually tended to be bound to Szeged, so I applied for the seminary here at the time of Bishop dr. Joseph Udvardy. At that time all bishops were forced to give the names of seminarians to the Office of Church Affairs. The Office’s men inquired after me, and pretty soon I was again called to spend another half year at the army (Note: 1986 – as far as I know – none of my graduate fellows were taken away to be soldiers twice at that time).
Was it a revenge on you by the contemporary political system?
Just like in the case of my university interview, this time I also had the chance to realize that “God can write straight even on crooked lines.” I could have begun my theological studies in 1986, but later on I benefited by the delay. Since being politically unreliable, the six-month military service done without any kind of ranks helped me to prepare myself for a half year to the seminary in spirit. In the barracks of Cegléd “I did what my homeland required” by sitting in the watchtower spying the distances eagerly every other day.
After being discharged from the army in the spring of 1987 by the help of Divine Providence I managed to get visa to France and to get a lifetime experience about the worldwide Church in the tiny village of Taizé of Burgundy.
Do you speak French?
I sat my final exam in the Piarist School in French and I also took an intermediate English language exam during my high school years. The use of both languages helped me a lot in those months I spent in the ecumenical monastic community of Taizé the youth camps established by them still means a lot to me. In 1987 when finally I entered the seminary to become a priest I already had international experiences about the real life of the Church. I saw a very strong visual image of monastic life-style and about evangelization of young people that is still greatly impresses me as a reference point.
When were you ordained a priest?
After five years of studies in Budapest I was ordained as a priest by Bishop Endre Gyulay in the cathedral of Szeged in 1992. After this I continued my studies in Rome for two more years of scholarship and I specialized in biblical theology which gave me the incentive to teach this.
You graduated from Pázmány Péter Catholic University in theology in 1992…
Yes, theology was my second university degree, after that I got “licenciatus” at Gregorian University in Rome, that made it possible to teach theology in post secondary school institutes. Finally I made my PhD in Pázmány Péter Catholic University where I defended my dissertation with “magna cum laude” in 1997.
Where have you served as a priest?
At first I served in Újszeged as a chaplain, and then I spent one year in the Dome of Szeged. Meanwhile, I taught biblical studies (analysis of the resources: “biblical exegesis”) in the Theological College of Szeged. Over the years I edited and translated many college textbooks and other books, too. I also was a prefect in the Interdiocesan Seminary training priests at that time.
As far as I know you were also an assistant professor at the College.
Yes, I have passed all academic degrees known in higher education: assistant lecturer, assistant professor, docent, and finally professor.
What kind of relationship did you have with your friends, with other priests in this period? Have you had civil friends as well or only priests?
For some years I lived among the seminarians and theology teacher colleagues in Cathedral Square of Szeged. It meant intense spiritual as well as an intellectual life, where I was free to create. In these years, I published a lot of papers and studies, these years were about scientific creativity. As I went to university in this city so many of my fellow students know me well here. I have kept in touch with them up to now, many of them have had a nice careers, others have shown fine examples of family life. We have been lucky to enjoy each other’s company up to now, we have nurtured nice friendships.
What do you mean by nurturing nice friendships?
We have kept in contact since our university years I baptized most of their children. Although I am of a reserved and quiet nature at times a man of silence, I enjoy being with other people, visiting their homes. I enjoy community life yet I prefer staying in the background.
Did not you think of getting married after university?
There were a lot of girls around me, but I did not really call any of them my girlfriend. I enjoyed solitude; I was quite reserved at that time. When I think back I see God’s guiding hand in these facts concerning my life. I had really nice friendships with very nice girls I even fell in love, besides, once I even participated in a course for young engaged couples (to tell the truth, without a partner) because I took preparation for family life really seriously. But the call for celibacy and the priesthood was stronger in me than the attraction of finding a wife and getting married.
Working on scientific publications means devoted, deep concentration on the subject in silence all around. Scientific studies are written by lonely scientists usually.
It is true that profound silence and seclusion are necessary for academic work. As an independent college-professor until 2007, the circumstances allowed me to do scientific work freely in this area. In addition to a teaching post I have been a parish priest for eight years now, so I have not had the time for such a great amount of scientific work, like before, when it was my first responsibility. Nowadays in the mornings I try to continue working on scientific subjects (reading and writing), in the afternoons I usually take care of the affairs of the parish and in the evenings I visit families. That works quite well, and I’m basically happy. I can say for a joke, that, I “live out of my hobbies”.
In your biography I have just read that since 2000 you have been Executive Vice President of St. Jerome’s Catholic Biblical Society is it still so?
The Bible Society is an organization that supports the case of the biblical apostolate all around in the Hungarian areas of the Carpathian Basin. The founder of the Society Prof. Dr. Béla Tarjányi, who supported me in writing my doctoral dissertation, had confidence in me, so I got involved into the editing of the scientific journal called Jerome Biblical Pamphlets (Jeromos füzetek) and I also gave lectures on biblical topics from the very beginning. I have been committed to supporting the biblical apostolate from Szeged as well since those the early days of the Society.
In 2001 you uncommonly were tenured a professor. What did that mean to you?
As I have already mentioned I have graduated in 1992 at the Theological Faculty of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, and five years later I got my PhD at the same institution. Due to my scientific and teaching experiments I was asked to lead the Department of Liturgy and Pastoral Theology. That was a really great honour to me. The professors of the Faculty of Theology are those priests who belong to different dioceses all over the country but they are invited to serve in this central institution. So I moved to Budapest and lived there between 2001 and 2006 and taught at the university as a professor. After that I returned to my diocese to serve the education of young priests as a rector of St. Gerard Seminary.
From 2006, you were a vice-rector for scientific and teaching affairs at Gál Ferenc College for a few years. What would you say about it for our curious readers?
The Rector of the College is responsible for the management of the whole institution, while his vice rector deals with certain parts of College management. Because of my language skills and external relations I dealt with outer relationships. My observations on organizing education for decades in different universities and colleges made me apt to practice the same task in our college. Our college formed new connections with other colleges, even in abroad. That meant several visits to other countries. For example, I taught in the framework of the Erasmus program in Krakow, at the Ignatianum Jesuit University, but we also organized student exchange programs.
People cling to power – but you resigned!
Reality is complex and therefore difficult to clearly see the cause-and-effect of relationships. But the point is that I try to practice, not to insist on any privileges. I prepared to be a teacher, and it has been given: I have been allowed to teach the sacred sciences for more than two decades the most diverse fields of theology. On the other hand I have been given the chance to live out my priesthood in the community of believers organizing and leading their community life, trying to do my best.
You became the vicar of St Michael’s parish in 2007.
It was a great change of life style for me, but also a great challenge at the age of 45. Up to this time of change scientific research and education was my main area to deal with in the heart of the city. In Szentmihály I had to lead the community of a suburban parish in a suburban village atmosphere, which was a real challenge for me. After six years there I realized I had new charismatic gifts in me, these were new gifts from God, I would not have thought possible of having myself… I learned a lot from the local people, and I was able to give them something in return through sharing with them. We worked on a Christ-centered community around the parish. We opened Kindergarten groups as well as study groups for elementary school students in the community house, six groups of “Családi Napközi” thus providing jobs for ten young mothers. We established good activities for the youth, a football ground and provision for young adults and families. I left behind me a viable parish, when suddenly I was asked to change direction again.
Dear Professor, I should say – you are an excellent Joli joker! I mean that you can apply yourself to any situation anywhere. It means to me that everywhere you can be and should appied, in all areas.
I stand with both feet on the ground especially with regard to my schedule. I try whole-heartedly to be where I am! One part is the organizing of the parish community’s practical life, it is a sanctifying, teaching task. On the other hand, there is a more intellectual academic world I live in.
In 2013 you were transferred by your Bishop from Szeged-Szentmihály and appointed to be the leader of Saint Elisabeth parish in Újszeged.
It was a real challenge! The former priest in Újszeged left the holy orders, so in Biblical language we would say that “the flock was left without a shepherd!” Twenty years ago I began my service in Újszeged as a chaplain (and you might remember your first love always), it seemed to be almost impossible to say no to this invitation. I was asked that in this difficult situation whether I was ready to take care of the people of Újszeged community. After the request one of my eyes was crying the other laughing – as they say – because I loved Szentmihály so much that I could have imagined the rest of my life serving there. But because of the shortage of priests it seemed to be a reasonable decision to continue my pastoral life there. A great contrast that Újszeged parish was one of the biggest in the city! 20 thousand believers live here, and the majority claim to belong to the Catholic Church; two churches, 14 Masses a week, and a great variety of spiritual groups working in the parish.
We try, in cooperation with my older priest-colleague, not only to satisfy the spiritual needs of fervent believers but to call people far from the Church as well. This spring our new endeavour to enhance this intention was the Passion Play of Csíksomlyó (Transylvania), an outdoor performance in the Park next to the church, which touched many people in the surrounding area. A lot of young families try to build relationships through the “Családi Napközi” groups, taking care children from 1-6 years. We can pray to St. Elizabeth of Hungary and Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta – to help us continue to follow the path of love!
