Ebben egyebek mellett bírálta a médiapluralizmust aláásó kormányzati döntéseket is. Azóta a Klubrádiónak megvonták a frekvenciáját.
A jelentésben foglaltakról tíz éve tudunk. Szemtanúi voltunk, ahogyan a helyzet egyre romlott.

We last spoke last summer when the fate of the Index news portal was sealed and you issued a worrying statement. It’s been a good semester, and here’s Club Radio, which for a while, but maybe forever, lost its frequency. What else can come?
Unfortunately, we keep repeating the same thing. The current crisis of Hungarian press freedom is another fall into the abyss. We hoped the court would rule in favor of Club Radio. It didn’t happen that way, but we won’t give up! Together with several other organizations, we called on the European Commission to immediately start negotiations with the competent Hungarian authorities in order to allow the radio to continue broadcasting. We are pleased that the Commission has launched an inquiry. But we cannot predict what will happen. I hope it’s not too late. What else could I say, this is another blow to press freedom. We find it unacceptable that this could happen in the European Union.

Scott Griffen, deputy director of the International Press Institute, says action must be taken quickly because capturing the press will be irreversible.

The European Commission has promised to check whether what has happened to Club Radio is in line with, for example, the EU’s telecoms directive. Do you think this is the right direction?
I don’t know enough about the law to comment. In our view, the European Union should use all the means at its disposal and we will not stop putting pressure.

In the autumn, the European Commission published its reports on the rule of law in the Member States, including Hungary. Among other things, he criticized government decisions that undermined media pluralism. Since then, the frequency of Club Radio has been withdrawn. What good is such a country report then?
It’s an extremely belated attempt to explore the problems, but more than anything. We have known about the report for ten years. We witnessed the situation get worse. But now the rule of law report has been born, and the question is what the European Commission is doing with it. No one was surprised by the content. Everyone knows that media diversity is disappearing in Hungary. We also see that Orbán’s tactics are being copied in some countries. We published our report on Poland this week, and the similarities are so striking! Just like in Slovenia. I fear that if the EU does not act quickly, it will be unable to reverse the hunt for the Hungarian media. The clock is ticking, power must be prevented from inspiring the press to capture the press elsewhere. So, this is no longer just about Hungary. The EU has made many mistakes by not reacting to what has happened in Hungary, and now we are here with all the consequences.

Abroad, the Hungarian government often argues that we have freedom of the press, for example Club Radio! Doesn’t that matter now?
It’s really scary that they don’t even care about that anymore. They feel so saddled that they are not interested in the consequences. But their decision was also due to the fact that after the opposition took Budapest to the local elections, they considered the operation of Klubrádió too risky. The Orbans are constantly measuring: how much freedom of the press must be guaranteed in order to remain in power.
