Több mint egymillió ember került veszélybe Kínában Kuanghszi (Guangxi) tartományban, ahol súlyos kadmium szennyeződés történt a Liu folyónál. A súlyos természeti katasztrófával fenyegető balesetért felelős gyárakat és bányákat leállították, de a kadmium koncentráció még mindig nagyon magas.

Liuzhou városában és tőle északra a folyó mentén figyelmeztették a hatóságok a lakosokat, hogy ne igyanak a folyóból származó vízből. A szennyeződés elhárításán egyszerre több ezer rendőr, katona és tűzoltó dolgozik, de ez nem akadályozta meg kisebb fajta lakossági pánik kitörését. Vannak bevásárlóközpontok, ahol már felvásárolták az összes palackozott vizet. A kínai hatóságok most azzal nyugtatják a kedélyeket, hogy biztosítják a palackozott ivóvízből a készletek folyamatos feltöltését.
