Ernest Shackleton angol-ír felfedező 1914-15-ös antarktiszi expedícióján elsüllyedt hajója, az Endurance maradványait keresi a Weddell-tengeri nemzetközi expedíció, amelynek sikerült elérnie a Larsen C jégselfet – számolt be róla a hétvégén a BBC News.

A nemzetközi expedíció vezető tudósa, Julian Dowdeswell professzor, a cambridge-i Scott Sarki Kutatóintézet vezetője a BBC Radio 4 adásának adott interjújában elmondta: nem lesz könnyű megközelíteni a helyszínt, ahol a hajó maradványai lehetnek.

Ernest Shackleton, an shipwrecked by an English-Irish explorer at the Antarctic expedition of 1914-15, looks for the remains of Endurance at the Weddell Sea International Expedition, which has managed to reach the Larsen C iceberg, BBC News reported last weekend.

Shackleton’s expedition began in the summer of 1914 with the aim of crossing the continent by touching the South Pole. However, Endurance was surrounded by the Weddell Sea and crushed by ice and the ship sank. Shackleton escaped with the crew to the Elephant Island, then went on for help and eventually managed to rescue all of his men in the summer of 1916.

The Antarctic Weddell expedition has a clear idea of where you can lie in your ghost, about 3,000 feet deep in Endurance. Former shipmaster Frank Worsley was an excellent trained navigator and accurately recorded the ship’s sink coordinates.

Professor Julian Dowdeswell, Chief Scientist of the International Expedition, Head of Scottish Research Institute at Cambridge in Cambridge said in an interview with BBC Radio 4: It will not be easy to approach the site where the ship’s remains may be. “We have to cross the current situation with hundreds of kilometers of very hard-to-navigate sea ice,” he said, adding that, despite their excellent ice-breaking ship, it is impossible to predict whether it will break through the sea ice.

If you can get close enough to Endurance, the American Ocean Infinity geophysical research company participating in the expedition will deploy an autonomous underwater robot to trace the remains: the probe will be able to cross 20 miles of 20 kilometers across the seabed. If you find the wreck, you will also record it with an autonomous underwater vehicle.

Researchers expect Wood Endurance to be in good condition, because cold water does not have the organisms that could have been consumed.

Mensun Bound Marine Archaeologist expects the ship’s wrecks to be found in a semi-vertical state, and probably half of the hull. At the same time, he did not exclude that “the ship collided with the seabed and spilled it all out of a chocolate box,” the scientist wrote on his blog.

The expedition’s ship, SA Agulhas II, has so far been lucky in its journey, in contrast to other expeditions in recent years that could not break through the ice, has managed to reach the Larsen C iceberg and a number of scientific research programs he could do it already.
