Donald Trump amerikai elnök csapatkivonást rendelt el Afganisztánból és Irakból – jelentette be Christopher Miller az Egyesült Államok ügyvezető védelmi minisztere kedden, helyi idő szerint a kora délutáni órákban. A bejelentés szerint az Egyesült Államok január 15-ig 2500-2500 főre csökkenti a két országban állomásozó katonái létszámát.

Miller közölte: a döntéssel az amerikai kormányzat célja, hogy Afganisztánban véget vessen “a nemzedékek óta tartó háborúnak”. Hangsúlyozta, hogy a döntés előtt Washington konzultált a szövetségeseivel, beleértve a NATO-vezetést és az észak-atlanti szövetség tagjait is, továbbá egyeztetett az afganisztáni kormánnyal.

Az Egyesült Államok 2001 őszén, a szeptember 11-én elkövetett terrorakciók után vonult be Afganisztánba, Irakban 2003 óta van jelen katonailag. Irakot 2003-ban rohanta le, miután – mint utóbb kiderült – a George W. Bush vezette amerikai kormányzat tudatosan azt a hamis indokot terjesztette a világ elé, hogy Irakban tömegpusztító fegyverek vannak. Ezért később Colin Powell, a Bush-kormány külügyminisztere bocsánatot is kért, megjegyezve, hogy az iraki háború megindítása “folt a saját becsületén” is.

Donald Trump amerikai elnök 2016-ban azzal kampányolt, hogy véget vet a szerinte “vég nélküli” háborúknak. Ennek érdekében egyeztetett korábban az iraki vezetőkkel, az idén év elejétől pedig az afgán kormánnyal és a tálibok képviselőivel.

A kedden bejelentett döntésről hétfőn több amerikai médium előzetes, de meg nem nevezett forrásokra hivatkozó értesüléseket közölt, s ezek alapján többen aggodalmaikat hangoztatták.

Jens Stoltenberg, a NATO főtitkára kedden közleményben figyelmeztetett arra, hogy a NATO súlyos árat fizethet a túl korai csapatkivonásért. Még hétfőn este reagált a szenátus republikánus frakciójának vezetője, Mitch McConnell is, aki óva intette az elnököt az Afganisztánban és Irakban állomásozó csapatok kivonásának felgyorsításától. Mint fogalmazott: a csapatkivonás “az Egyesült Államok szövetségeseinek kárt, ellenségeinek örömet okozna”. Marco Rubio, republikánus politikus, a szenátus hírszerzési bizottságának vezetője egy interjúban arról beszélt: amiatt aggódik, hogy Afganisztánban “nagyon gyors összeomlás” következhet be.KAPCSOLÓDÓ CIKKÜNK2020. 11. 16.

Donald Trump withdraws U.S. soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered troop withdrawals from Afghanistan and Iraq, U.S. Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller announced in the early afternoon local time on Tuesday. According to the announcement, the United States will reduce the number of its troops stationed in the two countries to 2,500 to 2,500 by January 15.

Miller said the decision is intended by the U.S. government to end “a war for generations” in Afghanistan. He stressed that before the decision, Washington consulted with its allies, including NATO leadership and members of the North Atlantic Alliance, and consulted with the Afghan government.

The United States invaded Afghanistan in the fall of 2001, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, and has been present in Iraq since 2003. He rushed down Iraq in 2003 after, as it turned out, the U.S. government led by George W. Bush knowingly presented to the world the false reason for the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Therefore, Colin Powell, the Bush administration’s foreign minister, later apologized, noting that the start of the Iraq war was a “stain on his own honor” as well.

U.S. President Donald Trump campaigned in 2016 to end wars he said were “endless”. To this end, it has previously consulted with Iraqi leaders and, earlier this year, with the Afghan government and Taliban representatives.

Several U.S. media outlets reported preliminary but unnamed sources on Monday about the decision announced on Tuesday, and several have voiced concerns.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned in a statement on Tuesday that NATO could pay a heavy price for premature withdrawal. Even on Monday night, the leader of the Senate Republican faction, Mitch McConnell, responded by warning the president not to speed up the withdrawal of troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. As he put it, troop withdrawal “would harm the allies of the United States, the joy of its enemies”.
