Értem tehát a kolleganőmet.

At the sight of the celebrating crowd, my stomach twitched, special, a colleague of mine wrote when he saw a demonstrative push of heated fans on Tuesday, before a match against the Portuguese. What a denial, the sight of many black-clad, articulously roaring people didn’t throw up everyone: many were reminded only of their peculiar carlings of painful times. This team of thousands of young people, what a denial, doesn’t seem like a real fan in every situation. If, for example, they march down the street with beer bottles, cans, and not necessarily chanting the usual rhymes, there’s certainly something scary about them. And that’s what they strive for: their street march, their recorded shape, wants to suggest something other than that they’re getting ready for a match. So I understand my colleague. It is no coincidence that they are the ones who whistle the Irish kneeling in solidarity, and they are the ones who, with no respect, accompany the guest Portuguese to the field with a whistle concert. And they are also the ones that the Hungarian Prime Minister did not want to offend when he talked about slave-keeping nations in connection with the kneeling, something special shame, bad culture – while we Hungarians are a nation with a pure culture. Yes, we are sending the stranger to a warmer climate with a clean culture, with the encouragement of the Prime Minister. And so that Viktor Orbán is not alone in this, Master Hollik and Hoppál line up quickly next to him, and then Dániel Deák gives a serious theoretical determination to the matter. I would like to say that they all want to serve the prime minister’s football mania, but unfortunately there is more to it than that. Orbán is in great need of this company with the best tickets, and they are the commissioner’s voting base. Orbán consciously chose them when he realized that in this country masses can only be moved with nationalist overtones, he can take to the streets those who are buyers of chauvinist slogans, willing to see anyone at any time as a target, in defense of Hungary. This nationalist canon is always about something else. There are times when it comes to Imre Nagy’s funeral, there are times when it can be used against Bős-Nagymaros, there are times when it can be used against Gyurcsány, there are times when it is against migrants, and there are times when the president of Fidesz evokes these feelings with football. Whether to be afraid, to be afraid of them, we saw in 2006. They are easy to seduce, easy to put into action, because their nationalism really does not fall into the category of healthy nation-consciousness. Let’s not be unfair: there are such (free) teams in almost every country, just remember when British fans used to have to be banned from stadiums. The difference is most evident in the fact that elsewhere this incitement to hatred does not take place at the state level, it is by no means an important element of the party president-prime minister’s toolbox. At most in countries where the dictator needs it. By this I do not claim that Viktor Orbán is a dictator, only that they are his constituents, and he believes that is the only way he can keep them.
