A felmondás várhatóan hat hónap múlva fejeződik be, miután a pénzügyminisztérium hivatalos értesítést küld a magyar hatóságoknak.

– mondta a pénzügyminisztérium szóvivője.

The US Department of the Treasury has announced that it will terminate the tax treaty concluded with Hungary in 1979 after the Hungarian government decided to prevent the introduction of the European Union’s new global minimum tax of 15 percent, reports Reuters.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said that since Hungary reduced its corporate tax rate to 9 percent – which is less than half of the 21 percent American tax rate – the benefits of the tax treaty unilaterally favor Hungary and no longer the United States.

The mentioned convention was established to avoid double taxation and to prevent tax evasion in the field of income taxes between the Government of the Hungarian People’s Republic and the Government of the United States of America 43 years ago.

The timing of the termination – after the United States has been concerned about the treaty for years – suggests that the Ministry of Finance is trying to put pressure on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to agree to the introduction of the 15 percent global minimum tax accepted by nearly 140 countries, Reuters reports. .

The termination is expected to be completed in six months, after the Ministry of Finance sends an official notification to the Hungarian authorities.

Hungary exacerbated long-standing US government concerns about the 1979 tax treaty by blocking the EU directive on the introduction of a global minimum tax. If Hungary were to introduce the global minimum tax, this treaty would be less one-sided

said the spokesperson of the Ministry of Finance.
