Kanadába érkezett vasárnap Ferenc pápa „bűnbánati zarándoklatra”, amely során várhatóan ismét bocsánatot kér a katolikus egyháznak a bentlakásos iskolákban élő őslakosok tragédiájában játszott szerepéért.

A 85 éves katolikus egyházfő gépe helyi idő szerint késő délelőtt szállt le a nyugat-kanadai Alberta tartományban fekvő Edmontonban, az észak-amerikai országban tett látogatása első állomásán.

A hatnapos látogatásra érkező egyházfőt a repülőtéren Justin Trudeau miniszterelnök és az inuit származású Mary May Simon, Kanada első őslakos főkormányzója várta.

Ferenc pápa hétfőn Edmontonban ellátogat egy egykori bentlakásos iskolába, ahol bocsánatkérő beszédet tart, és őslakosokkal találkozik. – mondta a pápa újságíróknak a repülőgép fedélzetén a római felszálláskor tartott sajtótájékoztatón. Ferenc pápa közölte: szeretne Ukrajnába utazni, hogy közreműködhessen az általa sűrűn bírált, öt hónapja tartó háború lezárásában.

„Nagyon szeretnék Kijevbe utazni” – mondta a pápa, amikor esetleges ukrajnai útjáról kérdezték. A Reuters brit hírügynökségnek július elején adott exkluzív interjúban a pápa azt mondta: reméli, hogy röviddel kanadai látogatása után el tud utazni Moszkvába és Kijevbe. A pápa a kanadai látogatás első teljes napját az őslakos népeknek és a bocsánatkérésnek szenteli.

1181 és 1996 között több mint 150 ezer őslakos gyermeket szakítottak el a családjától, és helyeztek el bentlakásos iskolában. Sok gyermek éhen halt, verték őket és szexuális visszaélés áldozatai voltak egy olyan rendszerben, amelyet a Justin Trudeau miniszterelnök által létrehozott Megbékélési Bizottság „kulturális népirtásnak” nevezett.

A több mint 130 ilyen iskolában becslések szerint akár hatezer gyermek is az életét veszíthette. A 2021-ben ezen intézmények közelében feltárt több mint ezerháromszáz sír valósággal sokkolta az országot.

Az őslakos szervezetek szavaknál jóval többet várnak el, szeretnének betekinteni a katolikus egyház levéltáraiba, hogy megtudják, mi történt azokkal a gyermekekkel, akik soha nem tértek vissza a bentlakásos iskolákból. A visszaélések elkövetőinek felelősségre vonását és kártérítést követelnek a túlélők számára, továbbá a Vatikáni Múzeumokban kiállított őslakos műtárgyak visszaszolgáltatását.

Jelenleg Kanadában az őslakos népek – az úgynevezett „első nemzetek” (indiánok), a métiszek és az inuitok (eszkimók) – a lakosság öt százalékát teszik ki.

Az inuitokat évtizedeken át erőszakos beolvasztásnak tették ki, egyebek mellett az állam által alapított és támogatott, de többségében a katolikus egyház által vezetett bentlakásos iskolák rendszere által.

Hétfő reggel a kerekesszékben közlekedő Ferenc pápa az Edmonton közelében fekvő Maskwacisban találkozik az őslakos népek képviselőivel, a találkozóra 15 ezer embert várnak, délben pedig ismét beszédet mondta az edmontoni első nemzetek Szent Szív-templomában.

Kedden misét mutat be az edmontoni stadionban, ahová 65 ezer embert várnak, majd a Szent Anna-tónál lévő zarándokhelyre látogat. Pope Francis arrived in Canada on Sunday for a “penitential pilgrimage”, during which he is expected to apologize again to the Catholic Church for its role in the tragedy of the indigenous people living in residential schools.

On Monday morning, Pope Francis, who travels in a wheelchair, will meet with representatives of indigenous peoples in Maskwacis, near Edmonton. 15,000 people are expected at the meeting, and at noon he will speak again at the Sacred Heart Church of the First Nations in Edmonton.
