President Joe Biden’s top national security adviser has held several confidential meetings with a senior aide of Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent months in an effort to reduce the risk of a wider conflict. Washington also warned Moscow not to use nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the newspaper’s information, Jake Sullivan consulted with Putin’s foreign policy advisor, Yuriy Uzhakov, and with the Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrusev.

The purpose of the talks was not to settle the war in Ukraine, but to keep the communication channels open and avoid possible escalation. The spokesperson of the US National Security Council, when asked about the fact of the negotiations, only said that “people are talking about a lot of things”, but did not comment further. “The English hundreds of newspapers publish a lot of fake news,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about it.
