121 ország vezetőit várja a Biden-adminisztráció az idén másodszor megszervezett demokráciacsúcsra, amit március 28. és 30. között rendeznek meg – de Magyarország és Törökország ezúttal sincs a meghívottak között.
A Népszava kérdésére az Egyesült Államok budapesti nagykövetsége megerősítette, hogy a Fehér Ház nem hívta meg Magyarország kormányát a március végén tartandó demokrácia-csúcstalálkozóra. A nagykövetség szóvivője kérdésükre azt válaszolta, hogy a 121 külföldi partnert a kormányuknak a demokratikus elvek előmozdítása melletti elkötelezettsége alapján hívták meg. Válaszukban arról is tájékoztattak, hogy Magyarország kormánya aggodalmát fejezte ki amiatt, hogy nem kapott meghívást a csúcstalálkozóra.
A március 28–30. között megrendezett demokráciacsúcs személyes és virtuális eseményeket foglal magába, amiket Washingtonban és négy partnerországban – Costa Ricában, Dél-Koreában, Hollandiában és Zambiában – tartanak. Az eseményen részt vesz többek közt az amerikai elnök, Joe Biden is.
A csúcson – ahogy a korábbi években is – a tekintélyuralmi rendszerek elleni küzdelemről, a korrupció elleni harcról és az emberi jogok támogatásáról lesz szó. Hasonló demokráciacsúcsot közel másfél éve tartottak 110 ország részvételével, azonban Magyarországot ekkor sem hívták meg. „Nem szorulunk rá, hogy bárki érettségi vizsga jelleggel bírálgassa el a magyar demokrácia állapotát” – reagálta ekkor Szijjártó Péter arra, hogy Magyarország nem volt a meghívottak között.

The Biden administration is expecting the leaders of 121 countries for the democracy summit organized for the second time this year, which will be held between March 28 and 30 – but Hungary and Turkey are not among the invitees this time either.
In response to Népszava’s question, the US embassy in Budapest confirmed that the White House did not invite the Hungarian government to the democracy summit to be held at the end of March. The embassy spokesperson answered their question that the 121 foreign partners were invited based on their government’s commitment to promoting democratic principles. In their reply, they also informed that the Hungarian government expressed concern that it had not received an invitation to the summit.

At the summit, as in previous years, the fight against authoritarian regimes, the fight against corruption and the support of human rights will be discussed. A similar democracy summit was held nearly a year and a half ago with the participation of 110 countries, but Hungary was not invited even then. “We don’t need anyone to criticize the state of Hungarian democracy on the basis of a high school graduation exam,” Péter Szijjártó responded to the fact that Hungary was not among those invited.
